Early Adcock History compliments of Betty Adcock Blalock and Eric Adcock
John Adcock who came to Providence Island in the Western Caribbean (an island 40 miles long and a few miles wide) from England via the ship "Expectation" in 1636 and a group of other Puritans who had come to the island (as far as we know only men were on the island and a few native Columbians) petitioned the governor of Virginia for land North of "James City," since "James City" was "full and no more souls allowed." The Spaniards were not attacking Providence Island and St. Andreas since only Puritans from England were on these islands and there was no financial gain to attacking them. However, the settlers also requested the Providence Company in England to allow them to go to Virginia. One of the reasons was they couldn't raise food to eat and the tobacco wouldn't live as "ye winds are so hot." John Adcock and a few of the others who were on Providence Island at the time - same names, that is - then show up in York County, Virginia on Queen's Creek and at Martin's Hundred, near the York River. This is currently near Newport News just a few miles from Fort Eustis, VA. John Adcock, Edward Adcock, and a few others are there in the 1640's and 1650's. Then in the latter 1600's and early 1700's Edward, Thomas, several Johns, Burroughs, Henry, William, Joseph, and a few other Adcocks show up in Essex County (South of Tappahannock) near Bowler's Wharf on the Rappahannock River, actually when it was still Rappahannock County, and they were there until from about 1720-1743 - about 60 years. Edward was listed in several transactions as "son of John of York, deceased." So the Edward in York in the 1640's was probably this Edward's Uncle, the brother of the John in York. There are old records in York County (mostly land and court transactions), and pages and pages of court transactions in Essex County at Tappahannock. Just when these Adcocks disappear in Essex County, they show up in King and Queen, Hanover, New Kent, Charles City, Richmond, etc. and then by 1740's they are in Granville Co., N.C. and Buckingham County, VA., 100 years after they first appear in York County. When anyone starts checking, they should keep in mind when the counties were formed and check the district or parishes. There may be some merit in checking the early (English Church) parish records - I don't know where, but I am sure those of you experienced know how to do this. (Of course, I do not have 100% proof that the John and other Adcocks - I believe there were three more - on Providence Island were the same ones who were in York, VA, just a year or so later, but since there is no record that John came over from England on another ship, and they did petition the Governor of VA for land just where they went, I believe that is proof enough. The Spaniards did gain possession of Providence and St. Andreas in 1641.
Ken: I strongly believe that all the Adcocks in Granville County are descendants of the York/then Essex County, VA Adcocks. The John Adcock group of Granville County are among about 30 families who were the first settlers in Granville County and they were commonly called "the Queen's Creek Club." Even though some families came from Hanover, some from Isle of Wight, some from King and Queen and a few other counties, they had all apparently originated from the Queen's Creek, VA area - where the first Edward, Thomas and John Adcock lived in the 1640's through 1660's. When they first came to Granville they named the creeks the same as the ones in Virginia and they had eastern VA surveyors to survey the large land grants. I also strongly believe that the group of Adcocks who moved to Buckingham County, VA were from the same group of Adcocks in York/then Essex Co., VA - the names Henry, Joseph, Phoebe are very convincing. We know for certain that the Essex County, VA Adcocks originated from York. There were many of them there, all in the Southfarmham Parish. However, they all left that area in the late 1600's and early 1700's - most of them were gone from Essex County by 1740. I believe there are some land sales by Adcocks as late as 1743 in Essex Co.. "Old" John Adcock and his children were entrenched in Granville by 1750, and were granted land by the Earl of Granville - several hundred acres. John owned over 2000 acres of land during a 20 year period - but not at one time). It seems that Henry, Thomas and Edmund moved around a good bit. There was an Edmund and an Edmond, or it was spelled differently many times when they wrote that name - which is not unusual. In the 1784-87 census, Edmond was in Caswell County - St. David's District - which is now in eastern Person County - the exact same place which I now live. This is just a few miles West of where all the John Adcock group lived in the southwestern corner of Granville County. This Edmund had 3 males above 60 and/or under 21, 7 females all ages (and no slaves). Joshua lived in the same district in that same census with 1 male (head of household), 4 males under 20, and 2 females all ages. Henry moved from Granville/FMV/then from Caswell in the late 1700's to S.C. according to one land deed note. I do believe that Henry, Edmond (Edmund), Joshua, Pierce, etc. were from the Buckingham County, VA area and moved here when the Earl of Granville began granting land, and before they went on to "greener fields." By this time, the "old" John Adcock group and Henry/Edmund etc. would have been at least second or third cousins to each other. In the N. C. Colonial records, Edmond was in the Army, Edmund was in the Militia. Many of them joined the Militia, and then the Army by the time of the 7 year war, followed by the Revolutionary War - I hope no history teachers are reading this! The Abner Adcock who was in Warren County in the 1784 Census is a different Abner than the Granville Abner who was an adult in the early 1800's. Betty Adcock Blalock
